Samoa losing day to switch places on Date Line
Samoa has announced that it is erasing December 30th. .
Samoa is erasing the day to make the transition from the eastern side to the western side of the International Date Line. It hopes to match work weeks with it's trading partners Australia and New Zealand.
As things stand now Samoa loses two working days in the week. When it is Friday in Samoa it is Saturday in New Zealand.
With the change Samoa will go from 11:59 p.m. on Thursday to 12:01 a.m. Saturday.
For Samoan's born on December 30th they will be in the same boat as people who were born in a leap year. Samoa will now be one of the first places in the world to see each days sunrise first.
American Samoa will become the last place to see each day's sunset.
This isn't Samoa's first time switching sides on the calendar. In 1892 they gained a extra day when they switched from the west side to the east side of the Date Line.

It's events like this that remind me that time really is man-made construct. Good luck to Samoa for 2012! For the Samoans who were born on December 30th, they will always be one year younger!
