The Amazon Pink River Dolphin

Not only is the Pink Amazon River dolphin the brightest in color it is the brightest period. "Botos" as they are known in Peru are said to be the most intelligent of the species

Their brain capacity is 40% larger than humans.These magnificent creatures are friendly and sensitive. They have lived in harmony with humans for centuries, but now experts fear they face extinction in some tributaries.

Experts say many of the tributary populations are at risk due to the commercialized rape of the region and the mass destruction of the South American rainforest.

The Pink dolphins exact numbers are not known. However the Pink dolphins in the Upper Basin of the Amazon have risen from 8 pink dolphins 18 years ago to 45. Experts believe they have prospered in this region because of the decrease in illegal fishing and logging in the area.

The International Society for the Preservation of the Tropical Rainforest have made the Pink Dolphin a priority. They started a campaign they call PARD, Preservation of the Amazon Pink Dolphin.

Fortunately Amazon River Dolphins have no known natural predators, other than the acts of man. Another fact in their favor is that they do not need to be part of a large group to survive. You will often find them in small family groups of five to eight.

Much like humans dolphins form strong social bonds and many experts believe they have a matriarchal social order.

The Amazon Pink River Dolphin are as beautiful as they are bright. Protecting them needs to be a priority of those who are also endangering them...human kind.
